They might not feature as often on this website, but sometimes we come across particularly charming little houses during our wanderings, and for a moment it feels as if you are stepping back fifty years in time. I have listed five of those time capsules below…
Overview
Maison Piron
Maison Piron, also known as Maison Muller, is a ‘golden oldie’ in urbex circles. The cottage stood empty for many years, and it shows. As soon as you step inside, you feel transported back to the 1970s. Many of the former owner’s furniture and belongings were left behind when she moved to a retirement home. By now (2024), the property has been sold and cleared out, and renovation work has begun. The only thing that remains are the photos taken by the many urban explorers who have visited the property over the past few years…
Maison Grand Georges
Maison Grand Georges is another old favorite. The small farmhouse of a small farm has fallen into such disrepair that parts of the ceiling have collapsed. Considering the cottage has been open in all four directions for decadest, it is miraculous that anything is still standing. Since it is not very large, there aren’t many photo opportunities, but the limited shots you can take there are certainly worth it!
Café Dieferding
On the way back from a road trip through France, we stopped briefly at this small, cozy neighborhood pub, which also doubles as a grocery store, in a sleepy village in Luxembourg. Not a drop of beer has flowed from the taps for many years, yet this little pub is still in remarkably good condition. Unfortunately, we encounter vandalism all too often in buildings like this, but that is absolutely not the case here. A good clean-up and a lick of paint here and there, should be enough to get the pub up and running again…
Maison Kirsch
Still in Luxembourg, this Maison Kirsch (so named because of the many jars of preserved cherries) is yet again a well known location in urbexland, that is certainly still worth a visit. Once a rather ‘risky’ location, due to the watchful eyes of local residents, the heavily dilapidated building now seems to have been completely abandoned to its fate. Part of the rear facade has since collapsed. It is therefore doubtful whether the building will survive much longer…
Maison Biotex
Back in Belgium, we came across this remarkable house, where the former resident displayed an unhealthy fondness for collecting washing powder. Everywhere you find the typical washing powder containers from the 1970s. Biotex, Dash, Tide… It turned out that this collector had no preference for any one specific brand. Apart from that, this little house is also a beautiful time capsule for life fifty years ago…
