Zeche P (also known as Zeche DT) was one of the many coal mines in Germany's Ruhr area. Work on this coal mine began in the early 1940s but was delayed due to World War II. Mining operations would not begin until well after the war, towards the end of the 1940s. Coal was mined there for nearly 70 years, until the mine finally closed in December 2008.
The "hanging baskets" served as lockers for the miners. After changing, they stored their personal belongings in them, after which the basket was hoisted up to the ceiling of the chamber with a chain. The chain was then attached to a numbered metal frame. This protected the miners' personal belongings from potential thieves. It also served as an additional checkpoint for the mine supervisors to see who was (still) in the mine.
