A small school in the 'Westhoek', abandoned since 2014, which has unfortunately often fallen victim to vandals. The abandoned school buildings stand on a site that became available after the canalization of the river Dender in the second half of the 19th century. This primary school was built on that site in 1924. The school consists of a number of wings of one, sometimes two stories, and several playgrounds.
Vigilant neighbors keep an eye on things and call the police at the first sign of suspicious movement. Consequently, we were escorted out by the local police quite quickly. Fortunately, only after taking a few shots of the beautiful, dilapidated gymnasium. Just about the only room in the little school worth photographing...
The vigilance of the local residents is not entirely surprising. The abandoned little school was a favorite meeting place for junkies and vandals. They caused a great deal of nuisance and gave the local residents a strong sense of insecurity.
