Read moreA second part of a visit to this immense, still-active steel industry involves the pump house of the former gas-fired power plant that supplied the company with electricity. The pump house was built alongside the gas-fired power plant in 1899 and was in use until the mid-1970s. It was, in fact, an essential component of the power plant, providing the necessary cooling for the gas turbines. The building and its contents, electrically powered ACEC pumps, are now in an advanced state of decomposition and are overgrown with moss and ferns. Although this wasn't the main purpose of our visit, we did spend some time in this magnificent pump house...
