Read moreThis city played a pioneering role in the twentieth century through the development of a heat distribution network. The old power plant not only supplied electricity to the wider area; the steam generated there was also distributed to private buildings via an underground pipe system. The network of 45 kilometers of pipes supplied steam to 3,500 homes, schools, factories, hospitals, and other buildings. This energy powered central heating systems and also generated hot water in the city.
In 2008, the power plant was decommissioned. Unfortunately, the large turbine hall has since been almost completely cleared out. Nevertheless, the empty space makes for some nice images.
