This former municipal slaughterhouse was established in the 1960s but was sold to a private entrepreneur in the late 1990s. Pigs were transported in trucks, both day and night. Combined with the often unbearable odor nuisance, this caused considerable resentment among local residents. Eventually, an agreement was reached with the city to cease operations there by the end of 2015. Due to protests regarding the new location, the cessation of activities was delayed. Pigs continued to be slaughtered there until the end of 2016. Since early 2017, the site has been vacated pending demolition and the arrival of a new construction project.
A large part of the charm of urban exploring lies in visiting abandoned places and letting your imagination run wild about how people used to live and work there. At this location, that was quite a confronting experience... The confrontation with the fact that we, as humans, attach no more value to a living being than reducing it, without much formality, to a mere commodity. A cold, dark, and desolate place that made a deep impression on me for that reason. With every step I felt the shadow of the gruesome fate all these animals suffered through hover above me... In fact, this visit was the direct cause of my decision to become a vegetarian.
