Undoubtedly the hardest hit after the nuclear disaster was the city of Pripyat, located near the nuclear power plant. The town was founded in 1970 to house the plant's workers and their families. The city, once home to over 50,000 people, has now been reduced to a ghost town of hastily abandoned apartment buildings, schools, and even this hospital complex, MCK-126. It was here that, immediately after the disaster, first aid was administered to the firefighters who were first affected. The firefighters' uniforms, still highly radioactive today, more than thirty years later, are still stored in the basement of this hospital. For this reason, the basements were made inaccessible. It quickly became clear that the Pripyat hospital was not equipped to treat the victims of the nuclear disaster. They were therefore immediately transferred to better-equipped hospitals, including those in Moscow.
The huge medical complex houses not only the hospital itself, but also a dental department and a daycare center. Due to the complex's size, I've divided the series into separate parts. This first part covers the hospital itself. The maternity ward, with its many cots, was particularly moving.
