The beautifully preserved turbine hall of the former gas powered power plant. More than four years after our first visit (see part II below), we finally managed to get back to this still active steel mill for the part we didn't get around to the first time. Was this worth a revisit? I believe it was...
There are some industrial sites that are simply impossible to cover in a single visit. This is one of them. This power plant, located on a still-active steel mill, was built in the 1940s. A gas-fired power plant already existed on the site at the time, but it could no longer generate enough energy to meet the increasing production. This coal-fired power plant was built to supplement the gas plant. The turbine hall has since been emptied, but the impressive Stein & Roubaix boilers and their control cabins remain in the boiler room, and the entire installation, though in considerable disrepair, appears to be intact.
Because we weren't able to get to the turbine hall of the power plant during our first visit to this inddustrial site, we decided we would return later to complete the explore. On that next visit, we hope to be able to visit the power plant's old turbine hall. In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful boiler room.
