The state of this former NATO barracks in Germany is deplorable. Just about everything that could be destroyed has effectively been destroyed. Anyone walking or driving through the barracks today usually encounters ruins. Trees are growing inside the majority of the 16 buildings. Windows are smashed, walls have been defaced. The buildings literally scream for demolition. A few shots of the theater hall and another shot of the antenna mast were the best that could be squeezed out...
Construction of the barracks began in 1968. It was occupied in 1969. Between 1969 and 1990, the barracks served as a Nike position. In 1969, an anti-aircraft regiment of the Belgian Armed Forces was stationed there. From 1991 onward, the Americans used it as an administrative facility. The Belgian Armed Forces vacated the site in 1995. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice investigated the possibility of establishing a prison in the barracks. This project failed for various reasons.
The future of the military domain is unclear. The community regularly inquires with the new owner, a real estate agent, about the current situation. No concrete information has emerged from this yet.
