This mining company was part of the empire of a noble family, which was primarily active in the steel industry. The first piece of coal at this facility was mined in June 1856. The shaft was located two kilometers from what would later become the family headquarters. At least, as far as coal mining was concerned. Following this discovery, the consulting engineer proposed exploring the area to the south as well. Until then, the field of operation had been limited to the north due to the national border. Between 1862 and 1889, several new shafts were dug.
The coal was primarily used to fuel the family's steel mills. After the Second World War, production tripled in less than ten years. In 1946, the company was involved in the nationalization process of all French coal mines.
After 1960, however, the coal industry was hit hard. The company was forced to modernize, and investments continued until 1986. The headquarters ceased operations in 1986, but part of the site's infrastructure remained in use until 1989 for other shafts that were still in operation. In 2001 the last shaft was closed.
