The first urbex trip of 2017 was a solo trip to this Lost Asylum, also known to novice urbexers as 'Shutter Island'. In the early 1920s, there was a shortage of facilities for male psychiatric patients in this region. In consultation with the nearby university, the Brothers of Charity actively searched for a site to establish a new psychiatric center. In 1928, the brothers purchased a conveniently located farmhouse with accompanying lands, and construction commenced just a few months later.
The institution for over 800 psychiatric patients officially opened in 1932. The complex, a symmetrical ensemble of buildings and pavilions with associated grounds, currently has a total area of over 64 hectares. Little can be ascertained regarding the role and function of the abandoned pavilion within the institution as a whole. Based on what remains in the building, it seems plausible that it primarily served as a recreation room.
