Kopachi was a settlement just a stone's throw from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. During the 1986 accident, the village was severely affected by radioactive fallout. After the authorities evacuated the area, virtually every building in the settlement was demolished and 'buried' as an experiment. All that remains are a row of mounds, beneath which a house is buried, topped by a sign with the international symbol for radioactivity. The government completely ignored the fact that burying these highly radioactive buildings would not prevent further radioactive isotopes from penetrating the groundwater. Consequently, the soil and surrounding water remain severely contaminated to this day with radioactive materials, including plutonium, strontium-90, and cesium-137. Only a few buildings were spared from the government's ill-considered action, among which this daycare center.
