This hospital was originally part of the André Dumont mine in Waterschei (near Genk). Mining operations began in 1924, four years after the death of Dumont, the tenacious geologist who had discovered coal there over twenty years earlier. The original hospital was built in 1928 and initially served to care for injured miners. Later, the hospital was also opened free of charge to their families.
The original hospital was demolished and replaced in 1968 by a six-story new building. The mine transferred the hospital to the non-profit organization André Dumont, which expanded it into a general hospital. The number of beds increased from 100 to 200. The name "Kliniek André Dumont" (André Dumont Clinic) was then changed to André Dumont Hospital and became part of the South-East Limburg Hospital merger since December 31, 1995.
The "new" building was demolished in 2017. In its place came a new medical center and a shelter for elderly people with dementia.
