Hotel-restaurant 't Convent was founded in 1979 and quickly built a strong reputation. This resulted in a Michelin star in 1993; a listing that was retained until 2012. In 2011, the founder of the now-renowned establishment handed over his star kitchen to his son-in-law, who is also the head chef. His daughter took care of the front-of-house service.
In 2013, the starred establishment was suddenly closed, seemingly without any reason, which quickly set rumors in motion. The business was said to be bankrupt, and the founder had supposedly committed suicide…
Just as suddenly as Hotel au Paradis closed, the founder reappeared on the scene. It turned out that his son-in-law and daughter had left for France, where the son-in-law had accepted an offer to work at a three-star restaurant, and he needed some time to process this and to rewrite the menu.
Not long afterwards, however, things took a turn for the worse, and Hotel au Paradis turned out to be burdened by a heavy debt load. A recovery plan could no longer offer a solution. In 2013, the business was declared bankrupt. The furnishings were sold at public auction, but no buyer was found for the land and buildings. Since then, things have been deteriorating visibly. Burglaries, thefts, and vandalism have reduced the former star establishment to a ruin.
Against all expectations, 't Convent was acquired in 2018 after all. A couple from Roeselare paid over 500,000 euros for the former Michelin-starred restaurant. Those interested can follow the progress of the renovation on the 't Convent 2.0 website .
