This church was built in 1785 on the site where a 13th-century chapel previously stood. The church was embedded in the urban fabric, as was customary in the Middle Ages. In the early 1980s, the church fell into disuse and was deconsecrated. Due to its defining character, the church tower was classified as a monument in 1992 at the insistence of the local population. For years, the city council has harbored the hope of converting the church into a cultural center. Years of negotiations for the financing of the project resulted in a final rejection by the higher authorities in early 2017.
In the meantime, the church fell increasingly into disrepair. To such an extent that, due to a risk of collapse, the tower clock was removed in 2003. Once the higher authorities had turned their backs on the project proposed by the city, the fate of Gravestone Church seemed sealed… But as of 2025 things seem to have turned around. The town council found the necessary funding and as of may 2025 restauration of this beautiful church has finally started.
