Grand Hotel Regner in Waulsort was part of a cluster of hotels and restaurants along the Meuse. The first tourist activity in the area dates back to an inn owned by ferryman Ferdinand Martinot in 1876.
This hotel, originally called Grand Hotel de Waulsort, was built in 1904. In 1914, the Regner family took it over, after which it became known as the Grand Hotel Regner.
Thanks to the good train connections and its location in pristine nature along the enchanting Meuse, many tourists were drawn to the region, and numerous small hospitality businesses sprang up. In 1934, there were still eleven hotels, ten cafés, twelve shops, and twelve craft businesses.
Grand Hotel Regner was said to be the first hotel in Europe to offer the luxury of its own underground car park. Due to the aging of the buildings and shifts in the tourism sector, the hotel lost its former appeal, until the crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s meant it was no longer profitable and was forced to close its doors for good.
After years of vacancy and decay, the owner began demolition work in April 2020. This was necessary because part of the building had collapsed, creating a dangerous situation for the surrounding area. The hotel was demolished for safety reasons. There are no concrete plans for a new project yet.
