This elementary flight school, inaugurated in 1922, was one of the first airfields of the Belgian military aviation. Initially, and until the eve of the Second World War, it was the base of an Air Force unit primarily engaged in reconnaissance.
At the beginning of the Second World War, the airfield was bombed by the Luftwaffe. The squadrons stationed there had to hastily relocate to other airfields. Aircraft that were not destroyed by the German occupiers were evacuated to France.
At the end of the Second World War, the airfield was bombed again, this time by the American Air Force. It was not reopened until 1950 and became the base of the EVS (Elementary Flying School). Until 1969, the EVS flew Belgian-made biplanes. From 1969 onwards, however, they were replaced by light military training aircraft from the Italian aircraft manufacturer Marchetti.
The airfield, which until then had only a grass runway, wa equipped with two asphalt runways at that time. In 1996, the flying school's activities were transferred to a nearby Air Force barracks. Some buildings are currently still used by two clubs. However, the military barracks have been in complete disrepair since 1996…
