Until June 26, 2017, the national radio's medium-wave transmitters 927 and 1512 kHz (Sporza and Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal) were located in Imde near Wolvertem. For over thirty years, a number of the national broadcaster's radio programs were broadcast from this transmission station.
The associated transmission masts caused considerable nuisance to local residents. After all, the high power levels of the radio waves were picked up by all kinds of electrical devices. Residents picked up the signals via (mobile) phones, baby monitors, and even lamps and kitchen appliances…
Since 2008, the transmission masts were used less and the nuisance also decreased. On January 1, 2012, broadcasts ceased completely. The site has since been sold and will make way for a residential project. In any case, a new permit for heavy transmission equipment is out of the question.
