This monumental chapel was built between 1851 and 1854 according to a design by a Ghent architect. It originally formed part of the enclosed convent of the Theresian Sisters. When the sisters had become too few in number in 1968, they left the convent. It was subsequently converted into a primary school.
The chapel is a single-nave space, opening onto a square choir under a tent roof. Its beautiful and intricately detailed dome vault is particularly striking. The same applies, incidentally, to the rich Baroque stucco decoration and the impressive altar.
After the complex ceased functioning as a primary school, the building remained unused for a long time. Recently, the chapel has been given a new purpose. It is used for concerts organized by the local youth center, which also found a home in the vacant spaces of the former school. The Jesus dressed as Zorro is a subtle hint that they can take religion with a grain of salt...
