Education in this region has a centuries-long tradition. Some of the educational institutions in the city have a history dating back to the 14th century, and they are often linked to various religious orders that were active in the city. For instance, this school was connected to the city's beguinage, which developed into an educational center as early as the beginning of the 19th century.
Initially, the Beguines established a domestic science school for poor girls there. Until the mid-19th century, lessons were provided by two lay teachers who had settled in the beguinage. Initially, this took place in two of the Beguine houses, but when activities were later expanded, almost all the Beguine houses facing the street were incorporated into the school project. At the beginning of the 20th century, this school was finally built. A gigantic complex that, as a 'normal school', produced hundreds of female teachers over the years.
Only a few years ago, educational activities there were forced to cease following a damning report by the supervisory authority regarding well-being and safety in the buildings. The entire property was sold some time ago to a property developer who intends to transform the complex into a residential project, in which the facade, designated as architectural heritage, will be preserved…
