The 'Diesel Farm' power plant opened its doors in 1976. For nearly 40 years, it would be the region's main producer of electricity. The plant was powered by the combustion of diesel and had a nominal capacity of 83 MegaWatts. The plant has been the subject of controversy on several occasions in recent years. In 2007, protests were staged by various environmental organizations. At that time, the plant was powered by the combustion of palm oil from Malaysia. Palm oil production is particularly damaging to the environment.
In 2010, a ruptured oil pipeline caused severe pollution of the river during the transfer of heavy oil from an oil tanker. Due to the aging of the installations, the plant had not been profitable for some time. It was only deployed in cases of extreme emergency. At the end of March 2012, the curtain fell on Diesel Farm for good.
