This former army barracks was known as the 'Arsenal of Instruments and Equipment for Telecommunications', or Asiat for short. It was where the Belgian army manufactured and maintained military telecommunications equipment, among other things. Therefore, it was popularly called 'Den Technique' (the technics).
The barracks closed in 2008. After that, it housed refugees for a while and even housed a school. In 2018, the city council purchased the site from the Ministry of Defense with the intention of developing a multifunctional park. Today, the army barracks stand abandoned and desolate. Most of the buildings have been emptied, and vandalism is widespread. The building housing the boiler room is still beautifully preserved, as is an empty hangar with a curious water feature.
