At the time of the disaster, work was well underway to expand the nuclear power plant. Reactor No. 5 was nearly completed in the disastrous year of 1986 and was scheduled for commissioning in the fall of 1986. Work on No. 6 was also underway. However, with the explosion of No. 4, all construction activities were halted. These half-finished cooling towers are silent witnesses to the abrupt end of construction and ultimately life in general. The construction cranes still stand on the sites, as if they're waiting for the next shift of workers...
