Most people involved in the Belgian urbex scene know Montzen Railway station. It is one of the easiest locations to find and therefor for many explorers one of the first locations to visit.
Up until 2019 there was also an abandoned control tower, that was at one point the heart of the marshalling yard, which is far less known...
Of what was once intended to become one of Belgium's most important marshalling yards, only a shadow remains today. Montzen Gare was established during the First World War. Although it was initially intended to handle both passenger and freight transport, over time it increasingly focused on freight, eventually switching exclusively to freight transport from the mid-1950s onwards.
Due to the ever-growing activity at the marshalling yard, it was decided to build a tall tower from which an overview of all lines could be maintained. Construction began in the early 1970s. However, the station could not maintain its strong position in the long term and increasingly lost relevance. By the end of the 1990s, all activity had ceased and the station was abandoned. Today, only two railway lines are still in use, and even then only sporadically...
The tower has since been demolished. The last shot is one of Montzen Gare itself.
