Chateau de Brumagne was built in the mid-18th century in the Neoclassical style. This style is characterized, among other things, by a rather austere appearance on the exterior. However, this is compensated by the refined finish on the interior.
A devastating fire in 2001 destroyed much of this finish. The oak paneling in several rooms was completely consumed by the fire. The murals by Piat Sauvage were washed away by the extinguishing water. Beneath the traces of the fire, we can still see the beautiful, detailed stucco work here and there. This was applied in 1760 by the famous Moretti brothers.
The chateau was owned by a number of prominent figures in Belgian political history. It was a favorite residence for King Albert I and his wife, Queen Elisabeth. They stayed at the estate on several occasions. Incidentally, the King, a passionate mountaineer, died in an accident not far from this chateau in 1934.
