Chateau Ambiance, also known as Villa Marquette in Marke near Kortrijk, was founded nearly 50 years ago. It was once a high-class establishment, where illustrious names such as Charles Aznavour and Prince Albert of Belgium counted themselves among the clientele.
In 2008, the founders of the business handed over their legacy to a French successor and his wife. However, it did not take long for things to go downhill for Chateau Ambiance. The founders, who live next door, had to watch with heavy hearts as their life's work went belly up.
In 2011, the business went under and the new owners vanished without a trace. They left behind a mountain of debt amounting to 3.5 million euros. The court convicted them in absentia of fraudulent bankruptcy.
The contents of Chateau Ambiance were sold at public auction to help cover part of the debt. However, a new buyer was never found. At the time of my visit, the condition of the building was so deplorable that demolition was the only way out.
