Charbonnage No. 10 du Gouffre, located in Châtelineau, a part of Châtelet, was the main and last coal mine of the Charbonnages du Gouffre company. The coal mine operated from 1916 to 1969. The concrete buildings were built in 1934. After its closure, the site was converted into a zoo between 1979 and 1982 before becoming a car dismantling yard. Meanwhile, almost the entire site has been abandoned for many years, and only the ruins of the former company remain. The two headframes have long since disappeared. There were once plans to restore the buildings into a residential area with a multipurpose hall. Perhaps for financial reasons, these plans never came to fruition.
This coal mine was one of the first locations I visited in 2015 as a budding urban explorer and photographer. However, the quality of those first photos was abominable, and I always planned to return. Eight years after that first visit, it finally happened... Unfortunately, the weather conditions weren' quite optimal, but perhaps on the other hand the gray sky adds an extra somber dimension to the location...
