Biomass Power Plant was a thermal power plant, built in 1974 and commissioned in 1976. The plant had a total capacity of 556 MWe, which was generated primarily by two steam turbines. These turbines were powered by coal and biomass.
In 2012, the operator received an environmental permit to burn 100% biomass. This would have allowed the plant to claim 'green electricity certificates'. With this, the operator could secure a subsidy of 2.2 billion euros over a period of 10 years. However, the necessary investments for the conversion were never completed due to problems with the heat exchanger. The Flemish Energy Agency rejected the request for a postponement, causing the plant to lose the prospect of the billion-euro subsidy and forcing it to file for bankruptcy.
Biomass Power Plant has been bankrupt since April 2017 and the furnace was shut down. With that, Belgium's last coal-fired power plant disappeared. The already permitted demolition was postponed in 2018, and the plant is being started up one last time to cope with the winter energy shortage. Meanwhile, the demolition is in full swing…
