"Be Mine Forever," or St. Theodardus Church, to name it by its full name, is one of five 'mine cathedrals' built in the Kempen coal basin by the coal companies. Designed by architect Henry Lacoste, the church was built in the 'cité' (factory settlement) of the Beringen coal mine between 1939 and 1943. It was a Byzantine-style church. The entire complex—church, ambulatory, and adjacent buildings—is a solid brick structure and a beautiful example of brick expressionism. The church itself is a single-nave cruciform church.
The church's interior was specifically designed to give the miners a sense of familiarity. The galleries were designed with the mine galleries as a reference. The light fixtures were made from coal shovels, and the lamps from miners' helmets. The stained-glass windows are also particularly striking. Not stained glass, but glass tiles, set in a concrete frame. The glass tiles were custom-made by the Val Saint Lambert crystal factory.
The St. Theodardus Church was protected as a monument in 1985.
